If you run this as a family tradition, book in October or early November. If you are booking late, take a weekday. You will get a better vehicle, pay the three hour minimum instead of five, and the neighbourhoods are less crowded on a Tuesday anyway, which genuinely improves the tour.
Houston’s displays are scattered across the metro, so a route that hops between opposite sides of the city spends the evening on I-610 rather than looking at lights. Cluster geographically and accept that you will not see everything in one night.
