Before you book anything, do this sum. A seven night cruise means seven days of port parking. At roughly $20 to $35 a day plus port fees and Texas sales tax, that is $150 to $250 per car, and a group of fourteen usually brings three or four cars. You can spend $600 to $1,000 leaving vehicles in a coastal parking lot for a week before anyone has boarded a ship.

Galveston is about 50 miles from Houston, roughly an hour in normal traffic. The drive itself is easy. The cost is what happens at the other end.
Official Port of Galveston parking runs somewhere around $20 to $35 per day depending on whether you take an economy surface lot, a garage or a premium lot, and the online total adds port and city fees plus Texas sales tax on top of the base rate. Independent lots nearby run a little cheaper, often in the high teens to around $30 per day once fees are included, usually with a shuttle to the terminal.

Set against that, a round trip transfer for the whole group is frequently the cheaper option outright, and that is before counting fuel, the wear of leaving a car in a salt air environment for a week, and the fact that nobody has to drive home tired after a red eye disembarkation.
This is the part people get wrong when they call around, and it will save you money.
A normal party bus booking is hourly and continuous. The bus collects you, stays with you, and takes you home. A cruise transfer is two separate short trips separated by a week. The vehicle is not sitting in Galveston waiting for you.
So do not accept a quote that prices your cruise as one long hourly booking. Ask for a flat rate for the outbound transfer and a flat rate for the return, quoted separately. Any operator who understands cruise work will quote it that way without being prompted. One who insists on running the meter for seven days either does not do this often or is hoping you will not notice.
You can also book only one leg. Plenty of groups have someone drive down and take the bus back, or the reverse. Ask for both quoted individually so you can choose.
Most Galveston sailings board in the early afternoon, with all aboard typically a couple of hours before departure. Your cruise line’s documents give the exact window and you should follow those rather than anything on this page.
The rule that matters: build in far more buffer than the drive requires. The drive is an hour. Leave three hours before your all aboard time anyway. Here is what eats the difference:
Missing a ship is not like missing a flight. There is no next one, the ship does not wait, and catching up to it at the first port is an expensive, complicated exercise entirely at your own cost. Three hours of buffer is cheap insurance against that.
The Port of Galveston runs several cruise terminals, and which one you want depends on your line. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, MSC, Norwegian and Princess all sail from Galveston, and the port has expanded in recent years, adding a Royal Caribbean terminal at Pier 10 in 2022 and a terminal at Pier 16 for MSC and Norwegian in 2025.
What this means practically: tell us your cruise line and ship when you book, not just “the cruise terminal”. They are not all in the same place, terminal assignments can change, and a group arriving at the wrong pier with luggage and a departure deadline is a genuinely stressful start to a holiday.

This is the most common thing groups underestimate. A party bus is built for people, not suitcases, and a cruise group brings a large suitcase per person plus carry ons.
Fourteen people going on a seven night cruise means roughly fourteen large cases and fourteen smaller bags. That is a significant volume, and it will occupy seats.
Book one size up from your headcount for a cruise transfer, sometimes two. A group of sixteen that would fit comfortably in a twenty passenger bus for a night out needs more room when every passenger has a week’s luggage. Tell us the number of bags when you book and we will tell you honestly what fits, rather than discovering it in the driveway at 8am.
Disembarkation is earlier than most people expect. Ships typically clear passengers through the morning, and groups are often off and standing outside the terminal well before they anticipated.
Two ways to handle the collection:
Discuss which you want when you book. Groups that pick a fixed time and then miss it by ninety minutes are the ones who end up paying for waiting.
Worth knowing: everyone disembarks in a compressed window, so the roads around the terminal are busy on a morning when several ships are in. The drive back to Houston is usually quicker than the drive out of the port area.
If part of your group is flying into Houston to join the cruise, the geography is worth knowing. Hobby is much closer to Galveston than Bush Intercontinental, roughly 40 miles and about 45 minutes, against roughly 70 miles and around an hour and a half from Bush.
If your group has a choice of airport, Hobby saves close to an hour each way. If people are landing at both, it is usually cheaper to consolidate everyone at one point in Houston and run a single transfer down than to send a vehicle to two airports.
If anyone is flying in on sailing day, we would gently suggest they do not. A delayed flight and a ship that will not wait is the worst combination in travel. Flying in the night before is the standard advice for a reason.
Not every Houston to Galveston run is a cruise. The island works well as a group day trip, and here the booking is a normal hourly one rather than a transfer.
Common group runs:
For a day trip, remember the drive counts. Two hours of your booking is the round trip before you have set foot on a beach, so a five hour booking gives you about three hours on the island. Six or seven hours is more realistic for a proper beach day.

Every rate includes the chauffeur, fuel, ice and cups. We do not add a fuel surcharge afterwards, which matters more on a 100 mile round trip than on a night in Midtown.
Everything going to Galveston crosses the same bridge. The I-45 causeway is the only practical way on and off the island for a vehicle this size, and that single point of constraint shapes every trip.
On a normal weekday it is a non issue. On a summer Saturday, a spring break weekend, a Mardi Gras weekend or a heavy cruise sailing day, it becomes the reason your journey takes ninety minutes instead of sixty. There is no clever alternative route to give you, which is precisely why the advice on this page is always to leave earlier rather than to drive faster.
Coming back is usually easier than going out, with one exception: Sunday evenings in summer, when the entire island leaves at once. If your group is returning on a summer Sunday, expect the drive home to be slower than the drive down.
Groups consistently underestimate this. A party of twenty turning up unannounced at a seafood restaurant on the seawall on a Saturday in July will wait a long time, and hungry people in a group make worse decisions about everything else.

A realistic beach day is one main area plus a meal. Groups that try to do the seawall, the Strand and Moody Gardens in six hours spend the day getting on and off a bus.
For a beach day with a group:

About 50 miles and roughly an hour in normal traffic. From Hobby it is closer, around 40 miles and 45 minutes. From Bush Intercontinental it is around 70 miles and about an hour and a half. Traffic on I-45 south is unpredictable, so build in buffer rather than treating an hour as the plan.
