NRG separates its traffic by vehicle type, which is unusual and genuinely helpful once you know about it.
The Green Lot, entered via Gate 13 at 8499 Lantern Point Drive, is the designated area for limousines, taxis and private buses. That is where a party bus belongs. It is not the same place as general rideshare, which uses the Yellow Lot around Gate 16B off Main Street.
Why this matters to you: rideshare zones at a full stadium are chaotic by design, because they absorb thousands of individual cars in a short window. The bus and limo zone handles far fewer vehicles, so drop off and collection are calmer and quicker.
What to do with that:
Event parking at NRG is per car, per event, and the price varies by event and lot. For a group the comparison is not one parking fee against the bus, it is four or five parking fees, plus fuel, plus the fact that four drivers all have to stay sober and leave at the same moment to keep the group together.
In practice that last part is what breaks. Groups that drive separately to NRG do not leave together. Someone is parked in a different lot, someone else is stuck in a queue, and the plan to meet for food afterwards quietly dies in a car park.
The honest position: for two or three people, driving and parking is usually cheaper and fine. From about eight people upward, one vehicle starts winning on cost, and it wins on hassle well before that.
For standard Texans home games the general lots, Yellow, Blue, Green and Maroon, open four hours before kickoff. That is the clock everything else hangs off.
If you are tailgating, arriving when lots open is the point, and your booking needs to start early enough in Houston to get you there for it. If you are not tailgating, arriving 60 to 90 minutes before kickoff is comfortable, and arriving 30 minutes before is not, because the approach roads back up long before the stadium does.
Build the drive in honestly. NRG sits on the 610 Loop, and on a game day the last two miles take longer than the ten before them. From most parts of Houston, budget double what a navigation app says on a normal Tuesday.
Getting to NRG is a mild inconvenience. Getting out of NRG after 70,000 people have watched a football game is the thing that ruins evenings.
The lots empty into the surrounding road network all at once, and there is no version of that which is quick. Whatever your transport, you are going to wait.
What a bus changes is what the wait is like. You are sitting down, in air conditioning, with your group, and nobody is driving. There is no negotiation about who has had a drink, no queue for a rideshare that has surged, and no situation where half your party gets a car and the other half does not.

Because the events differ so much, the parking and drop off arrangements are not identical across all of them. Tell us which event you are attending rather than just the venue.
If you tailgate, the bus stops being transport and becomes the setup. It carries the group, the food, the chairs and the cool boxes in one load rather than spread across four boots, and it gives you an air conditioned place to retreat to, which in September in Houston is not a luxury.
The person who would otherwise be the designated driver can actually take part, which for a lot of groups is the whole reason they stop driving themselves.
Be realistic about the hours. Lots open four hours before kickoff, the game is about three, and the exit is another hour. A tailgate Sunday is a nine to eleven hour booking, not a five hour one. Groups that book short end up paying overtime in the fourth quarter.
Check the current tailgating rules before the day. They are set by the venue and the team, they change between seasons, and they cover things like what you can bring, where you can set up and when you have to pack down.
Weekday events carry a three hour minimum, Friday four, Saturday five. At NRG the party bus rental minimums rarely bind, because the event plus the exit exceeds them anyway.

NRG sits just inside the 610 Loop on the south side, which makes it reachable from most of the metro but means the last stretch is shared by everyone arriving at once.
The useful rule is that distance barely matters on a game day and direction matters a lot. A group coming ten miles from inside the Loop and a group coming thirty from Katy can arrive at the same time or in the opposite order, depending on which approach is jammed.
